Stop file sharing service windows 2003
I would love to see something to back this up because I do not believe this to be true. GP appears to have applied successfully. I have also never had an issue with group policy and this machine in the past.
Sorry, I was thinking about the DC. The client member server needs the client for Microsoft networks. My new question is that if Windows supposedly didn't have any known the time pre-existing vulnerabilities, why do we need to disable file sharing, other than to free up a smidge more resources?
Are there any specific attacks done on those ports that Windows is vulnerable to? Because if you don't need them, why run the risk? You don't want to offer any services that you don't absolutely need, especially on an Internet exposed box.
Does disabling filesharing also disable the possibility to connect to the server via port ? To close port , you have to go to Device Manager and select Show hidden devices under View. Stop it and set the startup type to Disabled. So filesharing isn't completely turned off until you follow nick kerensky's advice? Asked 12 years, 6 months ago. Active 7 years, 10 months ago. The "right way" to handle not exporting shares via SMB is probably one of the following based on your tolerance for risk and desired to deal with potential "strangeness" : Don't share anything, but leave service running. Firewall the machine to prevent access to ports and , but leave service running. Just stop the service and hope for the best.

I'm dropping on an edit now. Now that you mentioned stopping the service, I vaguely remember doing that before. Your "hope for the best" comment is enough to deter me from doing it again.
