Even if you get a race that actually loads and starts properly, the absence of a player minimum and of AI bots means that it's easy to find yourself in a deadly dull two-person race around Talladega.
Latency problems cause the opposing cars you can see to jerk around the track strangely. The game's online culture seems to feature an enormous number of players who are in it only to wreck, and even those who don't want to will probably find themselves banged up due to the lag and the strange tire-wear model. It's astonishing that Activision let a multiplayer mode this broken go out the door, and appalling that they are charging full price for it.
NASCAR The Game feels like a slapdash effort, a rough draft of a game dressed up with a fancy cinematic and some licensed music and sent out to make a quick buck off the fans. The detailed customization is great, the rewind feature is smart, and many other aspects are competent, but in almost every area the game has a glaring flaw or two. Fans starved for a real NASCAR title after several years of inactivity on the license may find this passable, but players who love NASCAR and want a game that really captures the experience will find that this isn't it.

The AI performs better on certain tracks than others. On the other hand, you could maintain a good line and top speeds on Daytona and still not qualify in the top Off the track, there are a couple of features to keep you occupied, paint customization being at the top of the list.
NASCAR 09 let you create custom designs in a paint program like Photoshop and upload them to an online locker; now, you need to do all of your cosmetic configuration in-game. You take to the circuits one at a time and make your way through a race season, including the road course races on Watkins-Glen International and Infineon Raceway. The mode is functional, but it's also dry and straightforward--no substitute for the impressive and extensive Fight to the Top modes in older NASCAR games.
Even victory celebrations are subdued. Your driver dances about and breaks out the champagne while surrounded by fist-pumping fans, but this canned display gets old, and the roar of the crowd sounds more like a mild sigh. The blandness of the visuals further emphasizes the lack of excitement. The frame rate holds up nicely on the track, but jagged edges, fuzzy crowds, and drab vehicles suck the life out of crash replays.
Outside of the career mode, you can take any car to any track for a one-off race, or compete in eliminator events in which you set the number of challengers.
These modes hold no surprises, so it's up to NASCAR 's invitational events to provide some diversity, and they do a decent job of it. You unlock these as you progress through your career, and they come in a few varieties.
Perhaps the most interesting are legends challenges, in which you must draft other drivers to unlock collectible coins. A satisfying whoosh makes it enjoyable to draft, so an event focused on this mechanic is a good addition. Time trials, elimination events, and two-part gauntlet races round out the invitationals.
